About the Project

Rather than a single fixed project, the placement is structured around active priority areas, which may shift over the course of the internship as the team's focus evolves. Areas of work may include ingredient functionality and formulation studies, physical and chemical characterisation of ingredients and prototype products.

Objectives

  • Accelerate progress on active formulation and characterisation workstreams
  • Generate data and insights (e.g. ingredient functionality, sensory/textural performance) that directly inform product and process decisions
  • Combine scientific understanding of ingredients and formulation with hands-on experience to deliver prototypes that meet sensorial and nutritional targets

Activities the candidate may undertake include laboratory or bench-scale experimental work, physical and chemical characterisation of ingredients and formulations, data analysis and reporting, project- and application-specific literature reviews (i.e. focused on solving a specific formulation or product problem rather than broad academic surveys), and participation in technical team meetings and project reviews.

Anticipated outcomes include a technical report or presentation summarising the candidate's contribution, and practical experience in industry-based food science and formulation R&D relevant to the candidate's future career.

Candidate Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in food science, food technology, or a related discipline
  • Strong interest in food formulation and applied ingredient science
  • Laboratory experience relevant to food
  • Factory experience preferred, but not required
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small, fast-paced technical team
  • Willingness to sign a confidentiality/non-disclosure agreement given the commercially sensitive nature of the work
