HDR Placement scholarship and award FAQs

Can I do a placement shorter than 60 days?

Yes, but you would not be eligible for the UQ PhD Industry Placement Scholarship or UQ PhD Industry Placement Award.

Can I access the 3-month scholarship for the 60-day Industry placement if I don’t have a stipend now?

This will depend on your circumstances. In most cases, if you do not have an existing stipend, you will not be eligible for a stipend scholarship. However, you may be eligible for a UQ PhD Industry Placement Award instead.

What is the difference between the UQ PhD Industry Placement Scholarship and the UQ PhD Industry Placement Award?

The UQ PhD Industry Placement Scholarship is  a 3-month extension of your candidature and living stipend. You are only eligible if you are receiving a UQ funded living stipend.

The UQ PhD Industry Placement Award is for candidates who are either self-funded, or are on an eligible non-UQ funded living stipend. It is provided as a one-off award payment.

If I have a scholarship funded by industry, can I access the UQ PhD Industry Placement scholarship?

If you are on an industry funded living stipend, this may already include a 3-6 month extension. You can check this by looking at your offer letter. If it is not included, then you may be able to work with your advisory team to negotiate the extension with your Industry scholarship provider. Alternatively, if your local school/institute has a special industry sponsored program, you may be able to access that. For example, these are offered for candidates in IMB and AIBN. If you are not sure who to contact, let us know and we can put you in touch with the right people.

Will I still be charged tuition fees during the extra 3 months?

Yes, but if you are eligible for the placement scholarship you will also receive a tuition fee offset scholarship for the period of the extension, up to 3.75 years full time equivalent (FTE) of candidature.

Can I do a placement if I am an international student?

Yes, in most cases you can undertake a placement if you are an international student. However, if you receive your living stipend from a sponsor (i.e. a foreign government or organisation) you should check with your sponsor to see if they are happy for you to participate.

When would I receive the Placement Scholarship?

If you are eligible for a placement scholarship, it will be applied at 3.5 years up to 3.75 years FTE. If you have any other scholarship already in place for that period, you will not be eligible to receive the placement scholarship.

When would I receive the Placement Award?

If you are eligible for a placement award, it will be applied at the successful completion of your industry placement.
