Peer-review of manuscripts submitted to journals, edited volumes and publishers is an integral part of an academic’s service to profession. Providing comprehensive, relevant and useful comments to authors can be a complex task, especially for PhD students and Early Career Researchers who are more often the recipients of reviewers’ feedback.
This workshop is designed to
(1) introduce you to the process of peer-review in international journals and the editors’ expectations in terms of the scope of comments and suggestions,
(2) identify good and bad examples of reviews, and
(3) apply the learnt knowledge to providing a short peer-review on a published paper* in your area.
*Participants are required to bring to the workshop an academic paper on which they want to focus.
The peer-review knowledge and skills acquired in this workshop are part of the essential transferrable skills as they are linked to providing critical feedback on someone’s work relevant to any workplace.
Presented by Dr Valeria Sinkeviciute. Dr Sinkeviciute is Senior Lecturer in the School of Languages and Cultures. She is Associate Editor in the Journal of Pragmatics (Elsevier) and Australian Review of Applied Linguistics journal (John Benjamins). As part of these roles, she evaluates submissions to the journals, sends them to reviewers and then communicates decisions on manuscripts to authors. She also regularly reviews papers to top international journals, edited volumes and book proposal to publishers (e.g. CUP, Routledge). Given her expertise in the topic, in 2023, she started running peer-review training sessions with her PhD students. UQ Experts profile: https://about.uq.edu.au/experts/16970
