This workshop provides practical tools, examples and guidance on how to promote methodological rigour within qualitative research. It highlights different types of contemporary qualitative tools and methods within health research, along with their theoretical background and strengths/weaknesses. Students attending the workshop will takeaway practical tools and examples to apply in their own research to promote methodological quality.

Learning outcomes

  • To be able to apply contemporary techniques to promote rigour in qualitative research
  • To be able to describe and elaborate on which methods are relevant to different qualitative approaches

Presenter

Dr Tony Barnetis an ARC DECRA Fellow in the School of Psychology, The University of Queensland. Tony's work explores the social and cultural contexts of alcohol and other drug use, treatment (including novel therapeutic interventions) and policy change. About Research design

Your research degree requires the ability to apply "analytical and critical thinking skills to generate new knowledge, investigate problems and develop inventive solutions" (UQ HDR Graduate Attributes, 2017). This starts with determining the design of the research study through understanding and justifying the chosen methodologies and analytical methods. Building these skills during your research degree will equip you with the knowledge to apply them in a wide variety of contexts during your career.

The Graduate School has a range of sessions covering research methodolgy and methods delivered by esteemed providers such as ISSR.
