Progress Reviews are a core component of HDR candidature at UQ and play an important role in candidate development, research quality assurance, and successful thesis completion. Yet many candidates remain uncertain about what review panels are actually looking for and how to prepare effectively.

This session will unpack the purpose, structure, expectations, and common challenges associated with HDR Progress Reviews at UQ. Topics include:

  • what Progress Review panels are really assessing
  • common concerns and red flags raised by panels
  • demonstrating progress, feasibility, and research independence
  • managing project changes, setbacks, and difficult feedback
  • preparing effective written submissions and presentations
  • understanding possible outcomes and what happens next
  • practical strategies for staying on track towards thesis submission

The session will include practical tips, real-world scenarios, and insights drawn from UQ policy, procedures, and extensive experience supporting HDR progression and examination processes.

The session will draw on UQ policy and procedure, common progression scenarios, and the extensive experience of the speaker, Professor Pierre Benckendorff, Deputy Dean of the UQ Graduate Research School, HDR advisor, Progress Review Chair, and reviewer. Pierre will be joined by HDR candidates and an experienced review panel chair who will share practical insights on preparing for reviews, responding to feedback, and navigating candidature challenges. The session will include opportunities for questions and discussion.
