HDR Industry Placements

The Graduate School Career Development Framework facilitates industry experiences, as Placements, to allow you to experience current practice and develop networks while demonstrating and strengthening your transferable, professional and research skills.

2. Types of placements

Self-Sourced Placements

Most students prefer to self-source a placement.

The host organisation that you propose should be:

  • A reputable organisation;
  • A research-end-user defined as an individual, community or organisation external to academia that will directly use or directly benefit from the output, outcome or results of the placement project;
  • able to offer an immersive experience and adequate supervision while you undertake a meaningful research project within that organisation,
  • able to demonstrate they hold appropriate levels of Public Liability insurance (And Professional Indemnity insurance where applicable).

Placements will not be approved for High Risk Destinations (DFAT Level 3 or 4).

Placements cannot be undertaken at the following organisations:

  • Other higher education providers;
  • Organisations that are affiliates, controlled entities or subsidiaries (such as Medical Research Institutes) of a higher education provider;
  • Equivalents (international or domestic) of the above exclusions.

Clinical placements with direct patient contact cannot be undertaken as part of the HDR placement program

Ask your advisor if they can introduce you to industry contacts, or attend an information session and learn how to pitch a proposal to an industry contact. Remember to plan ahead and leave enough time to formally approve the placement.

    Advertised placements

    Unless otherwise stated, any advertised Placements are open to International and Domestic students enrolled in a PhD or MPhil program.

    In some circumstances, advertised Placements may be restricted to particular student groups. Any restrictions will be shown on the Placement advertisement.
